Back in the good ‘ole days of the 90’s, there was a pretty popular, and GASP!, educational game show called “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” If you’ve never heard of it, the premise is this: the infamous Ms. Sandiego and her posse of evil henchman make the rounds stealing national treasures and monuments and it’s up to the contestants to determine the gang’s whereabouts. But the catch is that each contestant has to correctly answer a question related to the location in order to move on in their search.
Okay, so here’s what I’m thinking. I thought it might be fun to begin a new series of blog posts in the same style as the game. In this version, however, the clues will be based on the demographic information of a country- a country in which one of our partner orphanages and/or children’s homes is located.
Genius right?!
So here are your clues for the first country:
1. Although the population of one of my oldest cities is currently flourishing, back in 1240, it was attacked and completely destroyed by a Mongol leader.
2. My literacy rate is higher than that of the United States at 99.7%. (The United States is currently at 99.0%.)
3. My major economic strengths include machine-building and metal working.
4. I rank 77th in the Human Development Index* (The United States is currently ranked 4th.)
*The Human Development Index combines indicators of life expectancy, educational attainment and income.
5. If you play the accordion, chances are your musical companion was created here.
