Mother & Daughter Salon Night Highlight

Hands of Hope Blog

Amy Calanog is not a foster or adoptive mom, but when she met Hands of Hope through a recent volunteer weekend at her church, she wanted to help serve families whose reality is not her own. As the owner of The Alternative Hair Studio in Fishers, Indiana, Amy partnered with Hands of Hope to provide a free salon event for foster and adoptive moms and their daughters.

On Wednesday, January 29, the team at The Alternative Hair Studio closed shop early and spent two hours pampering local moms and daughters with new hair styles and treatments. Amy Calanog and her team provided more than just a service, they executed an experience that will become a memory to be cherished by these families for years to come.

Amy describes the salon event atmosphere as positive, hopeful, and unifying. Her favorite memory from the night was being able to walk around to each chair and interact with each person. Amy got to talk with one girl, in particular, who seemed to be about 8-9 years old. The girl was beaming with excitement as she brightly watched her stylist transform her look. Amy reflects that in that moment, “There was nothing like being able to connect and see them feel at home in our salon.”

Amy and the team at The Alternative Hair Studio are inspiring to us because they have found a practical way to show up for their community. Amy is especially passionate about using the resources God has given her to give back: “I love being able to offer what I can!”
